6 Steps To Make Your Personalised Mug

Want to give a gift that'll actually be used every single day? Whether it's a birthday, anniversary, or just because, a hand-painted mug is the kind of keepsake people genuinely treasure. It transforms an everyday item into something personal and meaningful, and with a Pott'd Paintables Paint-a-Mug Kit, everything you need is already included. All that's left is the fun part: making it yours.

If you want to move beyond standard custom mug printing services, you can actually create your own mug from scratch or personalize a bisque piece at home. With a Pott’d kit, you have the choice: sculpt a unique coffee mug from scratch using air-dry clay and a clear coat seal, or grab a ready-made piece from the Pott’d Paintables Paint-a-Mug Kit to hand-paint your own artwork.

Step 1: Gather Your Kit

Your Pott'd Paintables kit comes with everything you need to get started: a ready-made ceramic mug, acrylic paints, brushes, and other tools to make patterns if you’d like. Before you begin, lay down the Pott’d Craft Mat or newspaper to protect your work surface and have a paper towel and water nearby to clean your brushes between colours.

Step 2: Prep Your Canvas

Before you start printing or painting mugs, cleanliness is key to proper adhesion. If you are using a bisque ceramic piece, wipe it with a damp paper towel or sponge to remove any lingering dust. For those working with air-dry clay, you must wait until the piece is completely dry (usually 24 to 72 hours) before applying any paint. You might also apply an optional layer of our Basecoat at the beginning or Seal and Shine gloss at the end to create a smooth surface. These products are specifically for air-dry clay!

Inspiration alert!

Does this sound like a lot of work? Looking for something nice and easy to start painting right away? We got you! At Pott’d, we’re all about simple but fun crafts. Here are some all-inclusive mug painting kits that takes away all the prep, leaving you with only the fun and creativity:

Step 3: Design and Transfer your Artwork

Now for the fun part: adding your personal touch! If you are wondering how to transfer an image onto a mug, there are several DIY techniques:

  • Hand-Painting: Use acrylic paints or specialized ceramic paints to add vibrant colours and hand-drawn patterns.

  • Markers: DIY personalized mugs can be made easily using oil-based markers for simple add-text designs.

  • Stencil: Using stencils is a great way to create precise designs on your mug. With the stencil set from Pott’d, create neat designs on your mug with flowers, letters, and more!

  • Mockups: Use mockup generators to test how your mug designs will look in real life before committing to the print.

Before you pick up a brush, take a moment to think about your design. A little planning goes a long way! Some ideas to get you started:

  • Text and quotes: A favourite saying, an inside joke, or simply a name looks striking on a mug

  • Patterns: Stripes, dots, florals, or abstract shapes are beginner-friendly and effective

  • Portraits or illustrations: Great for a truly one-of-a-kind gift

  • Colour blocking: Simple, bold, and always looks professional

Step 4: Layer and Paint for Best Results

When applying paint, always use multiple thin coats rather than one thick layer. This provides even coverage and prevents the paint from cracking or peeling later. It is recommended to apply lighter colours first, followed by darker tones for your artwork. If you make a mistake, you can often wipe it away while the paint is still damp. Ensure each coat is dry before adding the next to keep the image crisp.

Step 5: Seal and Protect Your Masterpiece

To ensure your custom mugs last, you must seal and protect the surface. For air-dry clay, applying a varnish, resin, or clear coat can enhance durability and prevent chipping. Allow your personalised masterpiece to cure fully for at least 72 hours to ensure the paint is permanent and well-adhered.

Step 6: Care for Your New Favourite Mug

While many custom printed mugs are labeled as microwave safe and personalised mugs dishwasher safe, extra care is always a good idea. For hand-painted ceramics, we strongly recommend hand washing only. The high heat and harsh detergents of a dishwasher can cause paint to deteriorate or chip over time. Taking care of your sipware ensures those favourite moments captured on the mug stay bright for years to come.

Moreover, we highly recommend not painting the inside or rim of the mug, as the paint is not food-safe.
